What Is Insert Firebox

Insert firebox is a type of fireplace which burns ethanol fuel. They are often installed without a chimney. Ethanol for these fires is often marketed as bioethanol (ethanol produced from biomass).
Emissions from insert fireboxes include carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compounds, and particulate emissions, which are released into the room. Insert fireboxes are a source of fine and ultrafine particles and have a considerable influence on the quality of the indoor air, ventilation reduces the effect.

The Advantages of Insert Fireboxes

Eco-friendly

  • Insert fireboxes are a more eco-friendly option for heating your home than traditional wood-burning fireplaces because ethanol burns cleanly and produces no smoke, ash, or soot. This means no harmful emissions or particulate matter are released into the air, improving indoor air quality and eliminating the negative environmental impact.
  • Ethanol is produced from crops such as corn, sugarcane, and other plant materials, which are renewable resources, meaning these fireplaces aren't dependent on finite fossil fuels that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Insert fireboxes are also highly efficient, with most models boasting an efficiency rating of 90-95%. This means that almost all of the heat produced by the flame is radiated into the room, reducing energy waste and ultimately lowering your home's carbon footprint.

Low maintenance

  • Insert fireboxes are incredibly low maintenance, making them a convenient option for those looking to add a fireplace to their home without the hassle of regular upkeep. No chimney or venting is required with ethanol gas fireplaces, unlike traditional wood-burning fireplaces. This in itself brings a range of benefits, such as the fact you don't need to worry about regular cleaning and how they can be placed in any room without considering ventilation.
  • These fireplaces are, of course, fueled by bioethanol, which is stored in easy-to-use canisters. Refuelling is quick and simple, and there is no need to wait for the fire to die down before adding more fuel, unlike wood-burning fireplaces.

Easy to install
Offers a variety of ethanol fire options, including freestanding, wall-mounted, and tabletop designs, with different sizes and styles to fit different spaces and preferences. When it comes to installation, their fires generally require minimal preparation and setup, and they can be placed on any stable surface and do not require any special wiring or plumbing.

Safe to use

  • Insert fireboxes are designed with safety features to prevent accidents and ensure safe operation. Most insert fireboxes have a spill-proof burner system that prevents fuel from spilling out in case of accidental tipping. Many models also have built-in sensors that detect overheating or low fuel levels and automatically shut off the fireplace to prevent damage or hazards.
  • It's important to note, however, that you should still keep the area around the fireplace clear of flammable materials, never leave the fireplace unattended while in use, and use a high-quality ethanol fuel that the manufacturer recommends.

Cost-effective
Ethanol fires can be a more cost-effective option compared to traditional wood-burning or gas fires for several reasons:
● Ethanol fuel is often less expensive than wood or gas.
● Insert fireboxes use less fuel than wood or gas fireplaces because they burn more cleanly and efficiently, which can result in further cost savings.
● They are typically more efficient at heating a room than traditional fireplaces as all the heat produced is released into the room, whereas traditional fireplaces can lose a significant amount of heat through the chimney or venting system.
● Insert fireboxes are often easier and less expensive to install than traditional fireplaces, eliminating the need for costly modifications to the home's structure.
● The maintenance is minimal compared to wood-burning or gas fires, so the upkeep costs are much lower.

The Working Principle of Insert Firebox

Insert firebox offers an efficient and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional wood-burning fireplaces. To understand its operational principle, you'll need to know the key components and process of generating heat.
The main component of insert firebox is its burner. This is where the fuel, bioethanol, is stored and burned.

One of the main advantages of a insert firebox is that it doesn't require a chimney, as it produces little to no smoke. This allows for easy installation and adds flexibility regarding where to place your fireplace in your home.

Regarding heat output, insert firebox can generate a significant amount of warmth. The flame can be easily controlled using the closing rod supplied with your insert firebox.

What Are the Components of Insert Firebox

Firebox
The firebox is where all the action happens! It is the part of the insert firebox where fuel is combusted and is typically housed inside of the wall. You probably will not be able to see much of the firebox – except maybe the back wall. The firebox comes in direct contact with the fire and takes the brunt of the fire's heat so give it the attention that it needs.

The mantel and mantel shelf
We tend to refer to the mantel and mantel shelf as simply, the mantelpiece. It originated in medieval times when fire pits started to be built into a homes living areas to help keep everyone warm (the mantel served as a hood that would prevent smoke from entering the room, diverting it back into the chimney). In modern usage, the mantel frames the opening of a insert firebox and often covers part of the chimney breast. It spans the top of a firebox and is often supported by legs which are generally the deepest and prominent section of the insert firebox.

Surround
The surround is the name given to all the parts that make up the insert firebox in its entirety (except for the firebox). The surround consists of the mantelpiece and side supports, usually in wood, marble or granite. We also offer surrounds in limestone and cast iron. Historically, surround inserts were placed where the fire burned, and was often constructed of cast iron and backed with decorative tiles. Presently, many customers choose to create a more modern-looking insert that incorporates a period style but harmonised with their modern living space better.

Hearth
The hearth refers to the floor area of stone directly in front of the firebox opening. Originally the hearth was used for cooking food and storing cooking utensils and was an integral part of a home – usually its central and most prominent feature. Today, it has become more of a decorative feature and is used for storing fire accessories.

Corbel
This is the block that projects from the face of the wall. While its job is to physically and visually support the elements placed above it, the corbel has also become a popular design element within insert fireboxes.

Plinth
The plinth is the name given to the square base on the lower legs of a insert firebox.

Insert Firebox: Always Be Careful When Filling with Ethanol

Ethanol, also called bioethanol or ethyl alcohol, gives off flammable vapors at room temperature.

During fill-up or upon a spill, liquid ethanol can evaporate and produce dangerous vapors. These may stagnate, since they are heavier than air. If their concentration is high enough, such vapors may be set ablaze by any flame.

When using an ethanol fireplace, it is therefore very important to be equipped with a portable fire extinguisher in good working condition. The installation of a smoke detector is also called for.

Do remain alert at the time of filling up:
● Use only the ethanol recommended by the manufacturer, as the fireplace was registered for use with a specific type of ethanol.
Do not fill up the burner when it is in operation or if it is still hot. Pouring ethanol in a fireplace which is turned on or is still hot may cause a projection of inflamed liquid.
● Let the appliance cool off for at least 15 minutes before filling it up to use it again. A longer cooling off period may be necessary with certain types of appliances.
● Avoid smoking near the appliance, and keep at a distance any open flame (for example, a candle). In case of an ethanol spill, remove any source of flame, such as a cigarette or a match, and avoid plugging in or unplugging any electrical appliance.

How Hot Is an Insert Firebox

If you place a wood burner thermometer on a bioinsert firebox, you'll find that it hits the temperature considered best operation for a wood burner (between 130ºc and 280ºc). At full burn, it reaches around 180ºc, which is plenty to warm a small-to-medium-sized room.

We don't recommend replacing your central heating system with a bioethanol fire - we don't consider it a suitable replacement for your primary heating source. But it is perfect as a top up fireplace or suitable for when you just wish to warm up one room.

Bioethanol makes a perfect additional heat source, offering a real, warming flame. In a standard-sized room, an average-sized bioinsert firebox will give off as much heat as an electric heater on a medium-to-high setting.

Are Insert fireboxes Safe

An ethanol fire doesn't spark. As with more traditional wood-burning fireplaces, insert fireboxes do not pop or spark. This adds a "safer" element to biofuel fireplaces. You don't need a screen in front of the hearth, as there are no fireballs jumping from within the confines of the fireplace. Therefore, the risk of a carpet or other combustible material being ignited by random sparks has been eliminated.

Ethanol fires don't smoke. Because insert firebox fuel burns cleanly, there is no need for a chimney or vent. This makes insert fireboxes safer, as there are no toxic emissions or apparatus where carcinogens can build up over time causing an unhealthy condition or house fire.

There is no large fuel tank. Unlike other fireplace solutions, an ethanol burner is self-contained. There is no large amount of fuel stored next to the open flame or connections that may leak, malfunction, or be attached incorrectly.

There is no fuel line. Unlike gas fireplaces, there isn't a direct fuel line running under your home to the fireplace. This leaves no possibility for leaks or incidents with conduits that are filled with noxious fuel.

How to Choose the Right Insert Firebox
1

Size matters: Consider the size of your space
The first thing you should consider when choosing an insert firebox is the size of your space. Measure the area where you plan to install the fireplace and choose dimensions that fit perfectly. Whether you have a small apartment or a spacious living room, there are insert fireboxes available in various sizes to suit your needs.

2

Safety first: Look for safety features
Safety should be a top priority when selecting an insert firebox. Look for models that come with automatic shut-off mechanisms and childproof locks. These features ensure that if any accidents occur or if children accidentally interact with the fireplace, it can be quickly turned off, minimizing potential hazards.

3

Style and space: Decide on the type of fireplace
Next, consider what type of insert firebox suits your style and available space. Wall-mounted fireplaces are perfect for those who want to save floor space and create a sleek, modern look. Freestanding fireplaces offer versatility as they can be placed anywhere in your home without requiring installation. Tabletop fireplaces are ideal for smaller spaces or as decorative accents on tables or countertops.

4

Quality check: Read customer reviews and ratings
Before making a purchase, always check customer reviews and ratings for the insert firebox you're interested in. This will give you valuable insights into product quality, durability, and overall satisfaction from other customers who have already experienced using it.

5

Fuel considerations: Insert firebox fuel
When purchasing an insert firebox, it's essential to consider the type of fuel it requires. Insert fireboxes use bio ethanol fuel, which is clean-burning and environmentally friendly. Ensure that the fireplace you choose is compatible with readily available bio ethanol fuels. Check if there are any specific recommendations or restrictions regarding the type of fuel to be used.

6

Additional options: Electric fireplaces as an alternative
If you're unable to install an insert firebox due to certain limitations or preferences, consider electric fireplaces as an alternative. Electric fireplaces offer convenience and ease of use since they don't require any venting or fuel refilling. They provide a realistic flame effect and can be controlled with a remote, making them a popular choice for those seeking hassle-free heating options.

FAQ

Q: Are insert fireboxes good?

A: Unlike traditional fireplaces, which burn wood and emit harmful pollutants into the air, insert fireboxes use a renewable and clean-burning fuel source. This means that they produce no smoke, soot, or ash, making them a great option for those with allergies or respiratory issues.

Q: Are insert fireboxes safe indoors?

A: What's more, bioethanol fires are far safer to use indoors than traditional fires due to the fact that they don't produce any smoke, ash or carcinogenic substances, so you're not breathing in any of these substances in your home.

Q: How does the insert firebox work?

A: It is hollow inside so you have a "vessel" into which to pour ethanol. Depending on its volume you can understand for how long it will burn, and how often you need to refill the burner. The ethanol burns up inside the vessel producing heat, and only insignificant amounts of steam and carbon dioxide.

Q: Do insert fireboxes give off much heat?

A: Insert fireboxes give off roughly 3kWh of heat - approximately the same amount as an electric fire on medium/high. Insert firebox won't heat a freezing room but will bring the temperature up a good 2-3 degrees (ºC) - perfect for taking the chill out of the air.

Q: Do you need ventilation with an insert firebox?

A: Insert fireboxes do not require a venting system with a chimney or flue as they do not emit harmful emissions, unlike a traditional wood burner. We suggest you refresh the air if using regularly by opening a small window in between refills. Whether wood, coal, gas, or bioethanol, all fires produce carbon dioxide.

Q: Do insert fireboxes heat a room?

A: Yes. The real flame provides a cosy atmosphere, but it also produces a comfortable toastiness for your room. However, we don't recommend replacing your central heating system with insert firebox as it will not produce enough heat and will be expensive to run.

Q: Do insert fireboxes smell?

A: High-quality bioethanol fuel emits very little-to-no odour while it's burning, but you may notice a slight chemical tang to the air when the flames go out. This is normal and nothing to worry about. You may detect the same smell when you close the fuel box slider to snuff out the flame.

Q: Are insert fireboxes expensive to run?

A: The cost of running your bioinsert firebox depends entirely on the amount you use it and the size of the flame you demand for your burn. Unlike gas, there are no standing charges for bioethanol — you purchase your bioethanol fuel as and when you need it

Q: Is insert firebox a fire risk?

A: Because bio insert firebox fuel is liquid, should it escape the confines of the ethanol burner while lit, the fire will escape as well. Known as a runaway flame, this may lead to a house fire or injury.

Q: Do insert fireboxes produce carbon monoxide?

A: Ethanol is a flammable liquid that technically should burn cleanly. However, under certain conditions, its combustion in a fireplace is imperfect and may produce carbon monoxide (CO) and certain other noxious gases, for instance, when the combustion temperature is too high or too low.

Q: Are insert fireboxes bad for your health?

A: So, there's nothing to worry about. Your insert fireboxes uses oxygen from the air, so it's advisable to create some ventilation in your room whenever you burn your fire. Keep your living room door open while burning, or open a window for a few minutes to let some fresh air in if the air becomes stuffy.

Q: What is better electric or insert firebox?

A: If you are looking for a safe and energy-efficient option, an electric fireplace may be the way to go. If you prefer the ambiance of a traditional fireplace, a bio insert firebox may be the better choice. Whatever your preference may be, be sure to choose a fireplace that is safe and meets your needs.

Q: Do insert fireboxes need a chimney?

A: Insert firebox is a cleaner, safer, more eco-friendly way to enjoy a real fire in the home. The fuel doesn't emit smoke or fumes, so you don't need a chimney.

Q: Can you turn off the insert fireboxe?

A: You only have to click on the remote control or the button on the burner. This will cut off the supply of bioethanol and, consequently, the flame stops. Depending on the model of the fireplace, the flame will go out immediately or after a few minutes when the last added bioethanol has burned off.

Q: How long does insert firebox last?

A: Typically, 1 litre of bioethanol fuel burns for around 3.5 to 4 hours (with the shutter fully open). Closing the fuel box lid halfway increases the burn duration, but reduces the heat output and the flame size.

Q: How warm are insert fireboxes?

A: On average, a bioinsert firebox produce around 2-5 kW of heat output. This is roughly equivalent to a small electric heater and can provide enough heat to warm up a small to medium-sized room. One of the benefits of a bioinsert firebox is that the heat output can be easily adjusted.

Q: How do you fuel an insert firebox?

A: The fluid can often be directly injected into the fire opening or through a small limb next to it. We recommend to always use a funnel or pump to avoid spilling the bio ethanol fuel. If you waste any bioethanol, you should always make sure to remove it before turning on the bio fireplace.

Q: How long does insert fireboxes fuel last?

A: The length that insert fireboxes fuel lasts varies on the settings in which you are burning the fuel. Usually, one litre of bioethanol fuel will last for 4 hours if it is burning on the maximum heat setting. However, if you burn the bioethanol fuel on a minimum setting, then the fuel can burn for up to 8 hours. If you shut off the fire, the fuel will preserve until you wish to light the fire again.

Q: Can you put a TV above a insert firebox?

A: We recommend leaving at least 45cm between the television and the insert firebox if you're installing a TV above a bioethanol fireplace. And while insert firebox don't get as hot as traditional wood or coal burners, they still give off plenty of heat, which could damage a TV if hung too close.
